Context:

  • This is the living room, where Damien had refused to enter for over 1 year, because he didn’t want to risk running into Ernie
  • Ernie and Betsy were watching TV, then turned everything off (lights included) to go to bed
  • While Ernie went upstairs, Betsy went to Damien’s room in the basement to check on his needs, as she often did.
  • He was upset about the type of food he wanted, and considered it a sign of disrespect. He started shouting, which was a common occurrence to both parents – but it became louder
  • Suddenly Damien pushed Betsy hard, she caught herself against a bookshelf
  • When she could retreat, she went up to the living room, placed a restaurant delivery, then grabbed a blanket to cry
  • Ernie heard the shouting, but the bang urged him to go downstairs and check what happened. He found her in the living room
  • After some prodding, Betsy explained that Damien had pushed her. This was the first time he ever did that, and it was a hard push. There was disbelief, and a quiet discussion of whether the cops should be called again
  • The discussion was short, because not a minute into the discussion, Damien entered the living room, with a knife in his hand

Again, all parties survived by miracle.
